Chinese consortium to build Latin America’s longest cable-stayed bridge in Brazil

Chinese contractors will build Latin America’s longest cable-stayed bridge, a trans-bay span in Brazil, as their latest stamp on new infrastructure overseas.

A consortium of Chinese companies is set to construct much of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge, which is due to become the region’s biggest cross-sea project supported by cables once completed in 2031, Chinese and Brazilian media said.

They would contribute to a 46.8km (29-mile) project including 12.4km crossing the Bay of All Saints along the Atlantic Ocean and a 682-metre (2,237-foot) span.

A piling ship built by a subsidiary of state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) left from Jiangsu province in eastern China on Sunday to reach the bridge site in 45 days, Xinhua reported. A piling ship helps build bridges by driving structural columns deep into the seabed.
