That’s how long it has been since an American man won the singles title at the U.S. Open, with Andy Roddick taking home the trophy.
Only three Americans have returned to the men’s singles final at Flushing Meadows since then:
- Andre Agassi in 2005,
- Roddick in 2006,
- Taylor Fritz in 2024.
Fritz — who grew up in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. outside San Diego — is still regarded as one of the best bets among this current generation of men’s tennis stars to break through at their home Grand Slam. But he went backwards here last year, bowing out in the quarterfinals against Novak Djokovic.
He’s had an uneven 2026 season including a quarterfinal loss at Wimbledon and a first-round upset at Roland Garros. The pressure has turned up on him now, as he begins another journey in his home Grand Slam.
