Russian hockey players may yet be allowed to represent their country in international competition after the IIHF Disciplinary Board annulled the governing body’s January decision earlier this week.

While the board “explicitly confirmed that this does not mean that Russia has automatically been reintegrated,” it determined that the IIHF Council did not provide sufficient evidence in its determination and has sent the matter back to the IIHF Council for further review.

In January, the IIHF determined that Russia would not be reintegrated into its 2026-27 tournament schedule based on safety and security concerns. Security has been a recurring factor for the suspension after each annual review by the IIHF Council.

That decision was subsequently appealed by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation to the IIHF Disciplinary Board.

While this does not automatically grant Russian teams status into the IIHF’s tournament schedule, it does significantly open the door unless the Council can provide evidence to the contrary. Belarus, which was suspended by the IIHF at the same time as Russia after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, was granted partial reinstatement for three competitions for 2026-27.

“At this time the Council will gather all relevant information and then make a decision on Russia’s eligibility in future IIHF competitions on an event-by-event basis,” the federation said in a statement Friday.
