The first Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park will have massive star power from the local club.
Kyle Schwarber formally announced his entrance into the derby Friday, joining Philadelphia Phillies teammate Bryce Harper in the field for Monday’s event. They will be the first two teammates to compete in the derby since Schwarber and Javy Báez participated as Chicago Cubs in 2018.
It could make for some good entertainment.
The two sluggers have squared off in a derby before; Harper defeated Schwarber in the final round during the 2018 contest held at Nationals Park. Harper, then a Washington Nationals outfielder, won it at his home park.
Schwarber leads the majors in home runs with 32. He has smashed 219 of them in four-plus seasons since joining the Phillies. He took center stage at last year’s All-Star Game, breaking a tie game in a dramatic swing-off that Major League Baseball had never before attempted.
Schwarber is expected to have a Phillies coach throw to him. Harper, according to MLB.com, will have Dodgers third-base coach Dino Ebel throw.
Only two Phillies have ever won the derby. Ryan Howard did it in 2006, a year after Bobby Abreu won it in 2005.
