Junior Caminero’s walk-off homer clinches postseason berth for Rays

With one swing of that bat in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday night, Junior Caminero clinched a postseason berth for the Tampa Bay Rays. He notched his 40th home run of the 2026 campaign in the process — a walk-off, two-run shot against the Houston Astros.

The 3-1 win guaranteed Tampa Bay will play in October, its first postseason appearance after a two-season drought. The Rays also became the first club in MLB to clinch a berth.

Tampa Bay still boasts a three-game lead over the New York Yankees with 15 games remaining. Winning the American League East will be the difference between a first-round bye and home-field advantage through the ALCS or playing a wild-card series on the road.

Known as an annual model of consistency, the Rays finished below .500 in 2024 and 2025 after five straight playoff appearances. Last season, Hurricane Milton displaced them in October 2024 and forced them to play home games at the Yankees’ High-A affiliate in Tampa.

However, back in their home digs in 2026, the Rays returned to relevance, with Caminero’s bat helping lead the way. For the second straight season, Caminero was named an All-Star, and he leads the AL in home runs. He is one of just two players in franchise history to hit 40 or more home runs. Elsewhere, designated hitter Yandy Díaz leads the AL in hits. Rays pitchers have the lowest WHIP in baseball, and closer Bryan Baker’s breakout season has led to an MLB-leading 39 saves.

Tampa Bay hasn’t won a postseason series since reaching the World Series during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. This will be the 10th postseason appearance in franchise history — the sixth under manager Kevin Cash. The AL leaders are still searching for their first World Series championship, having reached the Fall Classic twice in franchise history.
