Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo stunned the field for a second time, winning the Belmont Stakes in yet another come-from-behind thriller Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

Trailing 12 lengths off the pace midway through the race, Golden Tempo and jockey José Ortiz stormed from the outside past eight other horses to overtake Commandment down the stretch for the victory.

Trainer Cherie DeVaux said before the race that Golden Tempo would “need the perfect trip” to win the Belmont, and the horse delivered yet again.

Despite foregoing a shot at the Triple Crown, Golden Tempo’s Belmont win is historic, as DeVaux became the first female trainer to win two Triple Crown races and the second ever to win the Belmont since Jena Antonucci and horse Archangelo won in 2023. Golden Tempo opted out of the recent Preakness Stakes after trainer DeVaux decided to give her horse ample time to prepare for the Belmont.

Renegade was favored in the Derby as well as the Belmont, with 9-5 odds at race time over the rest of the nine-horse field, whereas Golden Tempo raced from an unfavorable ninth post and was one of four horses with 5-1 odds at post time. Renegade finished third.

The race also marks the third and last time the Belmont will be held at Saratoga Race Course before moving back to the newly renovated Belmont Park.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
