England defender Tino Livramento will miss the World Cup with a calf injury and be replaced in the squad, just a day before Thomas Tuchel’s side play their opening game of the tournament.
The Newcastle United full-back, capable of playing on both sides of defence, would have been in contention to make his major tournament debut against Croatia on Wednesday. Reece James, Djed Spence and Nico O’Reilly are the other full-backs included in Tuchel’s squad.
Livramento is coming off 2025-26 season that saw him limited to just 17 Premier League appearances due to various injuries. He sustained two knee injuries last year that kept him out for two months, before suffering a hamstring issue in January that caused him to miss 15 matches. A thigh injury in April sidelined him for the remainder of the domestic season.
He will now return to Newcastle to begin his recovery.
Per FIFA regulations, England will be able to replace Livramento with a player from the “provisional release list”, a squad of up to 55 named before being cut down to a maximum of 26 players before the tournament. The deadline for teams to replace an outfield player for the World Cup is 24 hours before their first game.
