Canada captain Alphonso Davies to miss international window for his honeymoon

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has confirmed that Alphonso Davies has not been included in the squad for the upcoming matches due to the captain going on his honeymoon.

Davies, 25, is Canada’s star player but has only featured for the team once since March 2025 due several injury issues, including an anterior cruciate ligament tear sustained that month.

That sole appearance came at the World Cup this summer, playing just 16 minutes in the nation’s round-of-16 elimination against Morocco. He was an unused substitute in all three group-stage games, meaning he missed playing on Canadian soil at the tournament.

FIFA, global soccer’s governing body, has combined the international breaks in September and October into one extended window, with the change in place until 2030. This year’s break will run from September 21 to October 6, with Canada scheduled to play three friendly matches against Chile, Peru and the United States.

However, Marsch said that Davies would miss the games and would be expected to return when the team regroups in November.

“Alphonso wanted to be here, and we wanted him in this camp, but he got married shortly after the World Cup,” Marsch told Canadian broadcaster OneSoccer.

“The World Cup, there was a lot going on for him and dealing with himself physically … we talked about ‘does he go on honeymoon for half the camp and then come in with us?’

“So I just felt like (he should) get his honeymoon sorted and then continue to keep moving in his physical state and form. He’s playing really well and looking really fit, feeling really good.

“We just wanted to make sure that, come November, when we need him to be ready for some meaningful matches and then going into the March and the whole next cycle, he’s set himself up to be ready to commit fully in all ways for what we need to the national team.

“Alphonso’s our captain, it’s not really a complicated issue.”

Davies has featured in all six games for his club, Bayern Munich, to open this season, starting three of them and scoring in the team’s 5-0 Champions League win against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League.

He has been capped 59 times for Canada, scoring 16 goals.
