Brighton midfielder Diego Gomez signs new five-year deal

Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Diego Gomez has signed a new five-year contract, with the option of a further year.

The versatile 23-year-old has been rewarded for his consistency in multiple positions since an £11million ($14.8m) move from MLS side Inter Miami in January 2025.

Gomez, a Paraguay international, has made 56 appearances under head coach Fabian Hurzeler. He contributed ten goals in all competitions last season, including four goals in a 6-0 win away to Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Sporting director Mike Cave said: “Diego has been an important player for us since his arrival and we’re pleased to have secured his long-term future. He has adapted to Premier League football seamlessly and embedded himself as a key player in the squad.

“We believe Diego will continue to develop this season and be an important player for us in achieving our goals this season and beyond.”

Gomez came through the youth ranks at Libertad in his home country before making the move in June 2023 to Inter Miami, where he played alongside Lionel Messi.

He has represented his country at senior level 20 times, the last four of those appearances coming at this summer’s World Cup. Hurzeler has used Gomez on the wings, at No 10 and in central midfield.

Brighton complete their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Serie A side Bologna at the Amex Stadium on Saturday before the first leg away to Norwegian team Tromso in the play-off round of the Europa Conference League on Thursday. They host Aston Villa in the opening Premier League fixture three days later.
