“Barely Breathing” Singer in Critical Condition

Duncan Sheik is seeking medical treatment. 

The “Barely Breathing” singer is “currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition” at a hospital, according to a family statement shared on his Instagram Sept. 16.

“Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time,” the statement continued. “We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate.”

Sheik’s family added in a message to fans, “Thank you for the continued love and support.”

Shiek, 56, rose to fame in 1996 with his hit single “Barely Breathing,” which landed him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1998.

Though the award eluded him that year—going instead to “Candle in the Wind 1997” by Elton John—Sheik ended up taking home a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2008 as the composer of the Broadway musical Spring Awakening, which originally starred Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff.
