Andrew Garfield Explored His Grief on Movie The Uprising (Exclusive)

Andrew Garfield is sharing why grief continues to shape some of his most powerful performances.

Over seven years after the Oscar nominee’s mother Lynn Garfield died from pancreatic cancer, he gave insight into how his work impacts his own bereavement journey, including his latest role in the period drama The Uprising, in which he plays a grieving farmer who leads a revolution.

“This is an incredible vehicle to be able to express the thing that binds us all together,” Garfield exclusively told E! News about the Paul Greengrass film, in theaters Sept. 11, “which is pain, a woundedness, a grief, on the other side of that, a longing for a more just world, a world that makes more sense to our souls.”

“We’re all feeling like we want to create a better world together right now in the times we’re in,” he continued, “so it all just amalgamated and felt like a full rich meal to dive into.”
