416 arrested in France after Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League win

Hundreds of people were arrested in France due to unrest following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League final win in Budapest according to home secretary Laurent Nunez.

Nunez told a press briefing on Sunday that 416 arrests were made, of which 283 were in the area of the capital.

Luis Enrique’s side came back from a 1-0 deficit against Arsenal to tie the game in normal time and send the final to penalties. After Gabriel’s miss ensured PSG won their second Champions League title in as many years, thousands of people took to the streets of Paris in celebration with flares, flags and starting fires.

“There were celebrations peppered with some disorder, which lines up with the situation that we predicted and therefore anticipated,” Nunez said, per Franceinfo.

“Four attempts to block the Périphérique (the large ring road that encircles Paris) prompted an extremely swift police response, which successfully defused the situation,” Nunez added.

The number of arrests in Paris came to more than double those when PSG beat German champions Bayern Munich to reach the final. Earlier this month, Nunez announced that 127 arrests were made in the area of the capital, with 23 police officers injured, following the semi-final second leg in Bayern’s Allianz Arena.

The disorder also followed events before the match started in which Hungarian police made arrests and started an investigation into fans lighting flares and fighting.

PSG went 1-0 down early on in the game following a Kai Havertz goal in the fifth minute. In the second half, Ousmane Dembele equalised in the 64th minute from the spot after Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in his own box.

The sides remained level through extra time but Enrique’s side secured their second Champions League in a row after Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze and Gabriel missed penalties in the shoot-out.

Despite the loss, Arsenal will return to London for their Premier League title parade on Sunday. It is set to be one of the largest operations of the year for the Metropolitan Police, with 500 officers deployed.
