‘The Office’ sequel: When does ‘The Paper’ come out?
The show will follow the same format as “The Office,” with the same “documentary” crew filming around a new workplace.
WASHINGTON — Fans of “The Office” will have a new obsession this fall, when NBC Universal premieres a new show set in the same universe.
The first trailer for “The Paper” was released Thursday, giving fans a look at the underdogs writing for a Toledo, Ohio newspaper called the Toledo Truth Teller. The series will follow the staff of a dying Midwestern newspaper as they attempt to stay relevant in a digital age.
It will follow the same format as “The Office,” with the same “documentary” crew filming around a new workplace.
“Several years ago, a documentary crew filmed the story of Dunder Mifflin,” the trailer opens by typing out onto the screen. “Now they’ve found a new subject.”
The show will star Domhnall Gleeson, who starred in “Ex Machina,” and Sabrina Impacciatore from “The White Lotus.”
Other cast members include Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young and Tim Key, according to NBC.
But fans of the American version of The Office will note a familiar face in the trailer. Oscar Martinez, played by Oscar Nuñez, has found a new job.
“Not again. I’m not agreeing to any of this,” he says in the trailer when he sees the documentary crew. “I will make this unusable.” The clip then shows several censored moments where Oscar begins swearing at the camera.
Greg Daniels, creator of “The Office” and Michael Koman, co-creator of “Nathan For You” and a writer for Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show, are co-creating, writing and executive producing “The Paper,” according to NBC. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman and Banijay Americas will also serve as executive producers.
The show is set to premiere four episodes on Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, on Sept. 4. There will then be two new episodes every Thursday through September 25.
