Target price matching: Retail giant won’t match Amazon, Walmart anymore

When it was introduced in 2013, Target’s price matching was the first of its kind: A brick-and-mortar store offering to match prices found online.

WASHINGTON — Target is ending its price matching policy that would match the sales price on products sold for less at competitors’ stores.

The longtime program will be ending July 28, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

“We’ve found our guests overwhelmingly price match Target and not other retailers, which reflects the great value and trust in pricing consumers see across our assortment and deals,” a Target spokesperson said in a statement.

The price match program was introduced 12 years ago as a way for customers who found a product for less money on Amazon or Walmart’s website to match that lower price when buying from Target.

When it was introduced in 2013, Target’s price matching was the first of its kind: A brick-and-mortar store offering to match prices found online.

Other retailers quickly picked up the practice, including Best Buy’s “Price Match Guarantee” policy.

Walmart, one of Target’s direct competitors, had a price-matching policy that allowed customers to match online competing stores, but ended it in 2019.

Target will now follow Walmart in only matching prices found on its own website.

“Starting July 28, we’ll update our Price Match Guarantee policy to reflect this, allowing consumers to continue to shop with confidence at Target stores and Target.com,” the company said in a statement.

How to do a price match at Target

You can request a price match in the checkout line or at the store’s customer service desk.

To get the lower price, you’ll need proof of the sale. Screenshots or pictures cannot be accepted. Target only accepts advertisements from sources such as the entire printed ad, digital ad, or retailer’s primary website.

If you’ve already purchased the item from another retailer, Target will also accept the original receipt for it.

To get a price match, the item must be the exact same, in quantity, color and all other factors.
