Selma Blair shares health update amid multiple sclerosis diagnosis

WASHINGTON — Selma Blair says she’s doing “amazingly well” amid her multiple sclerosis battle.

The “Legally Blonde” actress shared her health update while at The Daily Front Row’s annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards last week. Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, told People that she is “truly relapse-free” from symptoms of the disease.

“I’ve been feeling great for about a year” she told the outlet at the event on April 24. “But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely… I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy and getting out and going out isn’t so scary.”

Blair also shared that her improvement has her thinking about her future in new ways.

“You’re just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day,” she told the outlet. “And now it’s like, wait, I realize I don’t know what my goals are.”

The 55-year-old actress said her thoughts are “much more career-oriented” at the moment and that she would love to get back to acting again. She also teased that she has some movies in the works, according to People.

In August 2021, Blair announced that she had been in remission from multiple sclerosis as a result of undergoing a stem cell transplant. She underwent hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation which uses stem cells derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood.

According to the Mayo Clinic, multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers. It can cause vision loss, pain, fatigue and impaired coordination. Its cause is unknown.
