Rite Aid store closings now over 200 stores: Full list of locations set to close
Rite Aid has revealed another round of locations closing as part of the drugstore chain’s ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.
WASHINGTON — Nearly 100 more Rite Aid stores are set to close as part of the drugstore chains’ ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.
Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week, citing continued financial struggles. It is the second bankruptcy filing for the popular drugstore chain in the last few years.
Court documents following the bankruptcy announcement revealed Rite Aid initially planned to close 47 stores. Updated documents released last week expanded this list to include an additional 68 stores across seven states, and Friday’s newest update includes another 95 locations across seven states.
Specific closure dates remain unannounced, but USA Today reports that A&G Real Estate Partners anticipates auctions for locations to begin in May.
This latest round of closures follows significant downsizing from Rite Aid’s previous bankruptcy filing in October 2023, which saw the company reduce its footprint from over 2,300 locations to approximately 1,200 stores.
The company said in its bankruptcy announcement that it planned to keep stores open for the next few months as it tries to sell substantially all of its assets. The company isn’t buying new inventory so bare shelves are likely to become more common, according to the Associated Press.
The struggling drugstore said it acquired $1.94 billion in new financing to keep the stores operating during the proceedings. Rite Aid said employees will continue receiving pay and benefits as the company goes through the proceedings and potential sale.
The company runs 1,245 stores in 15 states, according to its website. It has a heavy presence in New York, Pennsylvania and California, which alone has 347 locations.
List of Rite Aid store closures
If approved as proposed, a total of 210 locations across 12 states will close in addition to the company’s “initial closing locations,” according to bankruptcy filings. It’s unclear if and when the proposal will be approved, or when locations would fully close.
The new announcement included 74 Pennsylvania locations, bringing the total for the state to 128. It also included the first Maryland and Delaware locations set to close.
