Mooresville may expand downtown social district
The aim is to boost local foot traffic and simplify enforcement.
MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Visitors to downtown Mooresville could soon have more room to walk with a drink in hand.
Town officials are considering a permanent expansion of Mooresville’s social district, which currently allows patrons to carry alcoholic beverages in specially marked cups within a designated area. The proposed change would extend the boundary from Church Street to include the Mill 1 businesses, located just off the town’s main road.
That expansion would bring new opportunities for spots like Mamma Ramona’s Pizzeria.
“If people wanted a pizza and wanted a drink, they can bring the other businesses customers and it brings us customers,” said owner Tyler Cherry, whose restaurant sits just outside the current district. “Anytime they add anything down here, it’s good because we’re the one building left out of downtown — especially the events.”
Mooresville’s Director of Experience and Engagement, Christine Patterson, said the move would not only boost business but also make enforcement easier.
“The social district was put in place for small businesses,” she said, “and we want to make sure they can partake in it.”
Cherry believes the change would be a win for everyone.
