John Lithgow confirms he’ll be Dumbledore in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series

When asked about the offer to play Dumbledore, Lithgow described the decision as “not easy,” recognizing it could define the final phase of his illustrious career.

WASHINGTON — Award-winning actor John Lithgow seems to have confirmed that he will bring the beloved character of Albus Dumbledore to life in the upcoming HBO “Harry Potter” series.

The series, based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic novels, is expected to premiere in 2026 or 2027.

Lithgow, known for his roles across film, TV, and theatre, seemingly revealed his casting as Dumbledore during an interview with ScreenRant

“I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival… and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid,” Lithgow told the outlet. “But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

However, People and IndieWire reported that Lithgow’s deal still hasn’t been finalized.

HBO sent both outlets the same statement it shared when news of Lithgow’s possible involvement initially broke: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

According to Variety, the plan is for the “Harry Potter” series to make each book its own season, meaning the show intends to run for seven seasons. Lithgow is currently 79 years old.

Given the importance of Dumbledore to the Harry Potter narrative, Lithgow’s potential casting has made significant waves in the entertainment industry and fandom.

Despite the excitement, it has not been without its share of controversy. Some fans have expressed disappointment due to ongoing controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling’s views on the transgender community.

Despite this, many are looking forward to seeing Lithgow’s interpretation of Dumbledore, who has previously been portrayed by actors Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the Harry Potter films.

Recognized for his characteristic American accent, Lithgow’s casting also brushes against the “British-only” rule traditionally upheld in the “Harry Potter” film series.
