Jimmy Kimmel is a grandfather: Late-night show’s daughter welcomes baby girl
Jimmy Kimmel revealed he joined the grandfather club this week.
WASHINGTON — Jimmy Kimmel just leveled up to grandfather status.
The 57-year-old “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host revealed during his opening monologue Tuesday that he skipped Monday’s taping to be present for the birth of his granddaughter. Kimmel explained that it was the second time in 22 years he had missed a show outside of the COVID-19 pandemic and scheduled vacations.
“You know, we were supposed to have a show last night, but we didn’t because my daughter had a baby last night,” Kimmel said in the May 20 episode. “Katie and her husband Will had a baby girl right at the time we shoot our show last night, so I decided to be there instead of here.”
The 57-year-old host also shared his granddaughter’s “very cute name.”
“Her name is Patti, like a patty melt but with an i,” he said.
Kimmel also revealed that the baby’s middle name is Joan, named after the late-night host’s mother.
The talk show host apologized to the studio audience who had tickets for Monday’s canceled taping and to scheduled guest Seth Rogen, who he said was “understanding ” about the last-minute change.
“He was very understanding. Luckily, he was totally high when I called him,” he joked.

The “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host then discussed the “big responsibility” of becoming a grandfather and noted that it is “kind of scary” to bring a child into this world.
“It is kind of scary to bring a child into this world and say, ‘Okay, you’re in this now at least until the year 2100. Good luck,” he said. “These kids have to worry about the climate going on fire, MAGA, AI. You know what we had to worry about? The most dangerous scenarios the future held when I was a kid, honestly [were] quicksand, the Bermuda Triangle and killer bees.”
Kimmel shares two adult children, Katie and 31-year-old Kevin, with his ex-wife Gina Maddy. The host also has two younger kids, 10-year-old Jane and 8-year-old Billy, with Molly McNearney. The couple has been married since 2013, and she is a producer on his show, according to USA Today.
According to Late Nighter, Kimmel is the first active late-night television host to become a grandfather since Johnny Carson.
