Is Bed Bath & Beyond reopening? Plans for first store announced

The once-iconic Bed Bath & Beyond chain went bankrupt in 2023, closing hundreds of stores and transitioning to an online-only retailer.

WASHINGTON — Two years after closing stores across the country and going out of business, a revamped version of Bed Bath & Beyond is coming back with physical store locations and a new name.

The once-iconic retail chain went bankrupt in 2023, closing hundreds of stores and transitioning to an online-only retailer when the name was bought by Overstock.com.

The parent company that owns Bed Bath & Beyond now has a new name, changing over from Kirkland’s Inc. to The Brand House Collective after a shareholder meeting earlier this month.

The new company announced Monday that it would host a grand opening for the first Bed Bath & Beyond Home store in Brentwood, Tennessee on Aug. 8.

“We’re proud to reintroduce one of retail’s most iconic names with the launch of Bed Bath & Beyond Home, beautifully reimagined for how families gather at home today,” said Amy Sullivan, the CEO of The Brand House Collective, in a statement. “This isn’t just a store, it’s a fresh start for a brand that means something special to so many families. With Bed Bath & Beyond Home we’re delivering on our mission to offer great brands, for any budget, in every room.  It’s a powerful addition to our portfolio and a meaningful step forward in our transformation.”

Back in June, the company said it plans to accelerate the launch of Bed Bath & Beyond Home stores by converting existing Kirkland’s Home stores

The Brand House Collective has not said exactly where the Bed Bath & Beyond Home store will be. But job listings for the store on their website appears to show Cool Springs Pointe as the location. A Kirkland’s location is located in Brentwood, a suburb of Nashville, at that point.

The company said it plans to open five more stores in the Nashville area, eventually converting around 75 Kirkland’s Home stores into Bed Bath & Beyond Home stores through 2026.

Bed Bath & Beyond was known for its sales and discounts, with many customers using physical coupons to buy products. The new home store will honor those legacy coupons, according to company executives.

“The coupon we all know and love is back and for those who need one, a fresh version will be waiting at the door,” according to the store announcement

What happened to Bed Bath & beyond?

Bed Bath & Beyond — one of the original big box retailers known for its seemingly endless offerings of sheets, towels and kitchen gadgets — filed for bankruptcy protection in April 2023. The filing followed years of dismal sales and numerous attempts to turn the flailing business around.

By June the company had sold its intellectual property assets for $21.5 million to Overstock.com.

Overstock quickly took over the trademark, rebranding its online store to the more recognizable Bed Bath & Beyond name. Popular baby supplies retailer Buybuy Baby, which was owned by Bed Bath & Beyond, was also sold.

After the bankruptcy, a New Jersey-based baby retailer and longtime supplier to Buybuy Baby purchased the company’s intellectual property and the rights to several leases at shuttered stores, with plans to reopen them.

Nearly a dozen stores in five states were reopened later in the year.
