Charlotte hosts film festival for disability awareness



Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation celebrates the ADA’s 35th anniversary with a three-day film festival in Charlotte promoting disability rights.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This weekend, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation will present the Lights, Camera, Access! Film Festival in Charlotte, marking the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. 

The three-day festival will showcase films featuring positive portrayals of individuals with disabilities to foster awareness, inclusion and greater understanding of disability rights, according to the county.

The festival kicks off Friday from 8-11 p.m. at Park Road Park with an outdoor screening. The evening will feature “The Unbreakable Boy” at 9 p.m., with food trucks available on-site.

Saturday’s events run from 1-11 p.m. at Eastway Regional Recreation Center, offering both indoor and outdoor programming. The day includes sensory-friendly matinee screenings of “Turning Red” at 2 p.m. and “Finding Dory” at 4 p.m., both held indoors.

A panel discussion is scheduled for 6 p.m., featuring Sarah Baumgardner, executive and artistic director of Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts; Tim Miner, co-founder and chief creative officer of Charlotte is Creative; and Liz Paradis, director of audience services for UNC Charlotte’s Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. The day concludes with an outdoor screening of “Out of My Mind” at 9 p.m.

The festival wraps up Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at Northern Regional Recreation Center with an indoor sensory-friendly matinee screening of “Luca” at 2 p.m.

All festival events are free to attend.
