Belk customer files class action lawsuit filed for privacy breaches



Belk customers’ personal data and social security numbers may have been compromised in a data breach early May.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A class action lawsuit has been filed against Charlotte-based department store Belk after its corporate systems were hacked and its customers’ sensitive information was compromised in May. 

Belk experienced the hack from May 7 to May 11, 2025. 

Despite discovering the hack on May 8, Belk did not file a notice or notify individuals whose information was compromised until June 5, nearly a month later. 

The class action lawsuit claims Belk was negligent in protecting customer data by failing to implement updated security measures and violating industry privacy standards. 

The lawsuit demands monetary damages for the plaintiff and class action members.

Belk a major department store in the South, with nearly 300 stores open. The number of those affected by the data breach is unknown.
