WASHINGTON — In a new documentary, close friends and family members are opening up about Aaron Carter’s final days.

The two-part documentary, “The Carters: Hurts to Love You,” premiered Tuesday on Paramount+ and offers a closer look at the Carter family’s struggles with mental health and addiction as well as gives a retelling of the lead up to the late singer’s death.

Aaron Carter died in November 2022 at age 34 after he was found submerged in the bathtub of his California home. The Los Angeles County medical examiner ruled that the singer had accidentally drowned as a result of sedatives he’d taken and gas used in spray cleaners that he had inhaled.

Angel Carter Conrad, Aaron’s twin sister and the sole remaining sibling of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, opened up about her childhood as her brothers were thrust into fame. The documentary shares intimate photos and home videos of the Carter family throughout the years and touches on the negative effects of stardom.

The documentary also sheds lights on the complicated relationship between the famous siblings and gave new details about Nick’s restraining order against Aaron in 2019.

Weeks before the restraining order was filed, Aaron revealed to his twin sister that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and that he often had thoughts of “killing babies” and Nick Carter’s wife, who was pregnant at the time. The docuseries recounts the aftermath of the restraining order, which includes a chilling moment of when Aaron drove to his brother’s house with a gun in his car.

The documentary also features raw moments, including details about when Nick found out about Aaron’s death, and touches on the overdose deaths of their other siblings: Leslie Carter, who died in 2012; and Bobbie Jean Carter, who died in 2023.

“I’ll never forget, you know being in London at the time, when it happened and getting the text message,” Nick says in the documentary. “It’s still unbelievable to this day. I haven’t had a chance to grieve.”

Angel and Nick also share an emotional conversation in the documentary as they bond over their traumas and the survivor’s guilt from the loss of their three siblings.

“We’re the only ones left,” Nick says in the documentary. “The generational cycle, I want it to stop. I want to break it so badly and I don’t want it to affect my children. I don’t want it to affect your children.”

“Our parents don’t define us. I know that. You know that. Unfortunately, B.J., Aaron and Leslie, they did not know that. They had no idea that they could get out,” he continued. “They didn’t deserve it.”

Aaron began performing as a child in the 1990s, opening for acts including his brother’s boy band and Britney Spears. His career peak came in 2000 with the triple-platinum album “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” which produced hit singles including the title song and “I Want Candy.”

For years before his death, Aaron had been open about his substance abuse struggles, detailing his issues with inhalants in a 2019 episode of the talk show “The Doctors.” He also said in the interview that he was taking medications for acute anxiety and bipolar disorder.
