Spaceballs 2: Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis & Bill Pullman returning for 2027 sequel
It’s official, a sequel to “Spaceballs” is coming to theaters.
WASHINGTON — Nearly 40 years since the release of Mel Brooks’ legendary sci-fi comedy, “Spaceballs,” it’s finally time to buckle up for a sequel.
Amazon MGM Studios announced new details Thursday about the long-awaited follow-up, confirming it will be released in theaters in 2027.
Brooks, who turns 99 in just a matter of days, will pull double duty as a producer of the movie and return as his beloved character, Yogurt – a parody of the “Star Wars” character Yoda.
Brooks was featured in a special teaser trailer that debuted Thursday, playfully referencing the glut of Hollywood sequels.
“After 40 years we asked what do the fans want, but instead we’re making this movie,” Brooks remarks in the clip.
Adding in even more nostalgia, Rick Moranis will emerge from his cinematic retirement to once again don the helmet of the iconic villain, Dark Helmet. Joining him, original “Spaceballs” star Bill Pullman, as Lone Star, will also return to the spoof galaxy afar.
Moranis last appeared on the big screen for the movie “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves” which was released in 1997. In a 2015 feature by The Hollywood Reporter, he explained he had not retired, but stepped away from acting after his wife, Ann, died of breast cancer. In 2020, Moranis ended his 23-year on-screen hiatus to appear in a commercial for actor Ryan Reynolds’ phone company.
Actor and comedian Josh Gad is expected to star in the sequel, and serve as a producer and co-writer. He’s teaming up with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, as writers, and Josh Greenbaum in the director’s chair.
Hernandez shared Thursday that the movie is now going into production.
Actress Keke Palmer is also reportedly joining the movie’s cast.
So what’s the plot of this long-awaited sequel? Official details are still a well-guarded secret, but “Spaceballs 2” has been jokingly described by the studio as a “Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
The creators appear to have strategically planned the film’s release for the 40th anniversary of the original 1987 “Spaceballs.”
