Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr completes Juventus transfer

Juventus have completed a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr on loan with an obligation.

The midfielder, who has been injured, was left out of the squad for his side’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday after asking to leave Tottenham, according to head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

He missed Spurs’ pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand, after he requested, and was granted, an extended break following his involvement with Senegal at the World Cup, though appeared in a pre-season friendly against Hoffenheim in London.

Sarr faced increased competition for minutes in Tottenham’s midfield this season following the £100million ($135.7m) arrival of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United and £85m ($115.4m) acquisition of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.

Sarr joined Spurs from Metz for €18million (£15.4m; $20.9m) plus bonuses in the summer of 2021, and spent the 2021-22 on loan with the French side before moving to north London the following summer.

Since the 2023-24 campaign, he has been a regular figure in Tottenham’s midfield, though only half of his 26 Premier League appearances last season came from the start.

Sarr was a key member of Ange Postecoglou’s Europa League-winning side in the 2024-25 season, appearing in all but two of their matches en route to lifting the trophy and setting up the winning goal for Brennan Johnson in the 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.

The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations winner has made 141 appearances for Spurs, recording 11 goals and 11 assists.
