Brad Pitt discusses finalizing divorce from Angelina Jolie

The couple was declared legally single in 2019, but a full settlement on marital and property rights was not reached until December 2024.

WASHINGTON — Brad Pitt is speaking out about finalizing his divorce from Angelina Jolie after more than eight years of legal proceedings.

In an interview with GQ, Pitt briefly addressed the divorce settlement reached in December 2024, nearly a decade after Jolie first filed for separation.

“No, I don’t think it was that major of a thing,” Pitt told GQ when asked if anything felt different now that he’s on the other side of his divorce. “Just something coming to fruition. Legally.”

Jolie initially filed for divorce in September 2016, just days after a private flight in which she accused Pitt of abusive behavior toward her and their six children. While no charges were filed following investigations by the FBI and child services, the divorce proceedings extended for years.

The couple was declared legally single in 2019, but a full settlement on marital and property rights was not reached until December 2024.

A source close to Pitt told People in March that he was “happy the divorce is behind him” and focused on his relationship with girlfriend Ines de Ramon. Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, said at the time that the actress was “relieved” the settlement had been finalized but described it as only one part of a long and exhausting legal process.

In the GQ interview published Wednesday, Pitt also reflected on how his personal life remains a frequently trending topic. “It’s been in the news for 30 years, bro,” he said. “Or some version of my personal life, let’s put it that way.”

“My life is fairly contained. It feels pretty warm and secure with my friends, with my loves, with my fam, with my knowledge of who I am,” he said. “It’s like this fly buzzing around a little bit.”

Both Pitt and Jolie have been extremely tight-lipped about their divorce throughout the years.
