Around 80,000 pages of JFK files will be released on Tuesday, Trump says

US President Donald Trump said on Monday his administration will make public around 80,000 pages of files related to former president John F. Kennedy on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to present a plan to release records related to the assassinations of Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jnr.

Trump made the announcement during a visit to the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in, where he took a tour and chaired a meeting of its board of directors.

It was his first time at the Washington marquee arts institution since he began remaking it at the start of his second term in office. Trump fired the previous board of the Kennedy Centre, writing on social media that they “do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture”.

Trump replaced the board with loyalists, including White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Usha Vance, the wife of Vice-President J.D. Vance, and installed himself as chairman.

The Republican president’s allies have complained that the Kennedy Centre, which is known for its annual celebration of notable American artists, had become too liberal and “woke” with its programming.

Trump complained of “tremendous disrepair” on Monday speaking to reporters ahead of the board meeting, saying the centre “represents a very important part of DC and actually our country”.
