Why are Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston such a strong duo? Just check Fever’s OT win over Sky
INDIANAPOLIS — The Chicago Sky needed one more bucket to extend the action Thursday. Guard Skylar Diggins, playing in a return to her home state, delivered with a tying 3-pointer with less than a second left in regulation against the Indiana Fever.
It still wasn’t enough, however, as the Fever held on for a 114-106 overtime victory thanks to Herculean efforts from Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, who became the first teammates in WNBA history to record a 30-point double-double in the same game.
Clark led the way for the Fever with a season-high 32 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. She has now registered seven 30-point games in her Fever career, the third most in franchise history behind teammate Kelsey Mitchell (12) and Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings (10).
Clark’s huge outing also marked her second game this season and third of her career with at least 30 points and 10 assists. No other player in WNBA history has more than one.
Not to be outdone, Boston totaled a career-high 34 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Boston now has two games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds, the second most in franchise history. (Catchings had three.)
The All-Star duo of Boston and Clark combined for 12 of the Fever’s 16 overtime points to secure a second straight win. Indiana, which squandered a 19-point lead in the second quarter, held on to improve to 7-5 on the season. Chicago fell to 4-9, dropping its third straight game as part of a skid that includes losing eight of its last nine.
Sydney Taylor, a 5-foot-9 undrafted rookie guard out of Louisville, paced the Sky with a career-high 30 points off the bench, highlighted by 16 third-quarter points. She showed off her handle and shooting stroke, drilling four 3s, while the Fever struggled to slow her. Taylor entered Thursday’s contest averaging just 7.4 points per game, and she hadn’t even scored in the Sky’s previous two games. Taylor knocked down 10 of her 14 shot attempts in 20 minutes.
Diggins, a seven-time All-Star, totaled 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 7 fourth-quarter points to force overtime. However, she missed all three of her shots in the extra frame as Chicago went 1-of-8 from the field in OT.
