The Vegas Golden Knights saw two goals taken off the board in less than four minutes during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on challenges by Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour.
After Golden Knights captain Mark Stone appeared to open the scoring 36 seconds into the second period on Saturday, Carolina challenged for offside. Video replay showed that Vegas forward Brett Howden entered the offensive zone ahead of the puck before sending Stone in on a breakaway with a pass to the middle of the ice.
A second potential goal by Jack Eichel was wiped away at the four-minute mark of the period. Eichel swatted home a rebound just after linemate Ivan Barbashev had gone crashing through the crease, catching Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen in the head and knocking him to the ice.
Brind’Amour challenged that play for goaltender interference and was successful.
Eventually, the Golden Knights scored goals that counted.
Tomas Hertl broke through on the power play at 10:26 after Carolina was penalized for having too many men on the ice. Mitch Marner was given credit for a 2-0 goal scored 14 seconds later on a play where Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker accidentally redirected the puck into his own net. Marner then netted two more goals for a hat trick — the fastest in Stanley Cup history — to make it 4-0 by the end of the second, with six pucks in the back of the Carolina net in the wild period.
