CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Season 27 of NBC’s “The Voice” is underway, and a singer representing Charlotte made a big splash.

Bryson Battle, 21, is originally from Harrisburg but now calls Charlotte home. For his blind audition, he performed a rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song For you.” The performance got all four coaches to turn their chairs.

John Legend was the first coach to turn, followed soon after by Michael Bublé. Kelsea Ballerini and Adam Levine turned around in time to catch the end of his performance, and all four judges gave Battle a standing ovation following the end of his audition.

Ballerini said during auditions, she is often focusing on pitch and technicalities. She said that wasn’t the case during Battle’s audition.

“I literally just thought about how moved I was, because you were just singing from your soul,” she said.

The praise didn’t stop there.

“You might have the greatest voice I’ve ever heard,” Bublé said, adding he had sung the song himself countless times at his own shows but never sounded that good.

Levine said “only an idiot” wouldn’t be blown away by Battle’s voice, and said it will be important for him to find ways to surprise people with his song choices. Legend acknowledged the fact that he was the first coach to turn their chair, and said he had never heard anybody sing that song quite like Battle did.

“You made it feel fresh and new and exciting, and you found new musical places to go in it and we’re truly blessed to have you on this show,” Legend said. “This is why ‘The Voice’ exists.”

Battle ultimately chose Team Legend.

You can watch “The Voice” Mondays at 8 p.m. on WCNC Charlotte.
