Strasbourg sign Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen on loan

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has joined sister club Strasbourg on a season-long loan.

Jorgensen told Chelsea after the end of last season that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge in order to get more first team football.

The Denmark international has started just 34 times for the club since joining from Villarreal for £20.7million in 2024. Significantly, only nine of those came in the Premier League.

Filip Jorgensen has completed a season-long loan move to Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg.

Strasbourg need a new first choice goalkeeper with Mike Penders, who spent last season on loan from Chelsea, returning to the London club as a member of the senior squad.

Jorgensen was part of the Chelsea squad that arrived in Sydney on July 25 for the start of their pre-season tour, though he was given permission to fly back to London a few days later in order to finalise a move away.

The right move for Jorgensen?

Jorgensen will hope that what worked for Djordje Petrovic will also pay off for him.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petrovic opted to spend a season on loan at Strasbourg in 2024-25 after deciding he wanted to join a club where he would be guaranteed a starting role.

The Serbia international performed well in Ligue 1 and 12 months later secured a £25m move to Bournemouth.

Jorgensen wants a permanent move away from Chelsea and perhaps this is the best way he will get it. The 24-year-old has not been able to overtake Robert Sanchez as the No 1 at Chelsea. Arguably his biggest opportunity to do that came in the first leg of the last 16 Champions League tie at Paris Saint-Germain in March but he made mistakes for at least two of the goals in the 5-2 defeat.

There is a lot of optimism at Chelsea that 21-year-old Penders, who is already regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the game, will develop into their first choice long-term.

Sanchez will continue to fight for his place in the meantime, so with chances to play even further reduced, it is better for Jorgensen to head elsewhere.
