Caitlin Clark earns 1-game suspension after her 8th technical foul

CHICAGO — Caitlin Clark has said everyone should use a Magic 8 Ball to determine when she’d hit the technical foul total that earns her a league suspension.

If your trinket predicted Aug. 8 as the date, you might want to reconsult it for lottery numbers.

The Indiana Fever’s star guard drove past Chicago Sky’s Natasha Cloud late in the third quarter Saturday at the United Center, taking a bump and making incidental contact with an official as her momentum carried her out of bounds. After a moment, Clark was hit with her eighth technical foul of the season, which triggers an automatic one-game suspension by the league.

After the whistle for the tech, Clark could be seen saying “For what?” to the referee.

“(The referee) said I ran into her. I’ve already watched it on the tape,” Clark told ESPN’s Holly Rowe on the court after the game. “So, we’ll let the league decide, but it wasn’t intentional or anything. So, I’m hoping it’s getting rescinded, Holly. … I’ll see you on Tuesday!”

Fever coach Stephanie White, irate over the sequence, also received a technical for her reaction.

Clark’s on-court comportment has been under a microscope all season, and she has been both defiant that she will not rein in her competitive spirit while also acknowledging that the Fever need the league’s fifth-leading scorer and second-leading assist-provider on the floor.
