Mike Trout becomes first MLB player to homer on six separate birthdays

For Mike Trout, birthdays mean cakes, candles and homers.

A lot of them.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Angels center fielder marked his 35th birthday with a 400-foot solo shot in the first inning against the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game series, putting Los Angeles up 1-0. In doing so, he became the first player in MLB history to homer on six separate birthdays.

Trout broke a tie with Todd Helton, Derrek Lee, Mark Reynolds, Al Simmons and Alex Rodriguez, who each went deep on five different birthdays.

Trout had previously gone yard on his 21st, 22nd, 24th, 26th and 29th birthdays. His most recent birthday deep ball came on Aug. 7, 2020, against the Texas Rangers. He did not play on his birthday in 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2024 due to injuries.

This was the first time the Marlins have been on the receiving end of a Trout birthday home run. He has done it twice against both the Rangers and the Baltimore Orioles.

Friday’s shot was his 19th of the season and produced his 41st RBI. It was the 423rd career home run for the three-time American League MVP, who has spent his entire 16-year MLB career with the Angels.

It set the early tone for an Angels team trying to rebound in Miami after losing 10 of its last 15 games. The Angels entered the series with the league’s worst record at 44-71. The Marlins, meanwhile, entered the series 58-58 but on a three-game losing streak.
