The International Court of Justice on Wednesday gave a landmark advisory opinion in which it ruled that countries could be in violation of international law if they fail to take measures to protect the planet from climate change, and nations harmed by its effects could be entitled to reparations. Climate activists watching the ruling on a giant screen outside the court clapped and cheered during the hearing.
