A conference jointly sponsored by the Federal Reserve Banks of San Francisco and Atlanta and the founding editors of the Journal of Financial Services Research. In 1986, a task force organized by the American Bankers Association convened to examine the safety and soundness of the banking industry and the efficacy of its regulatory system. The task force produced a report that concluded with policy options and recommendations related to issues including deposit insurance, market discipline, examination and supervisory reforms, insurance agencies, and expanded powers. The purpose of this conference is to evaluate how these recommendations have fared during the past twenty years and to update the recommendations to deal with future challenges.
